In a stump speech today, he thinks the US shouldn't be a secular state:
"I think we need to have a government that respects our religions," Gingrich said, appearing visibly agitated.  "I'm a little bit tired of being lectured on respecting every other religion on the planet. I want them to respect our religion."  (source)
Some religions in the US are opposed
  • to abortion,
  • to civil rights of blacks,
  • to gay rights,
  • to gay marriage,
  • to birth control (abstinence o.k.),
  • to masturbation,
  • to having sex before marriage,
  • to having sex for any other purpose than procreation,
  • to inter-racial sex,
  • to inter-racial marriage (the latter two only opposed by whites),
  • to beliefs in Jesus and his teachings as son of a god,
  • to beliefs in Muhammed as prophet of a god (same god as the ones that believe Jesus is the son), and his teachings,
  • to beliefs in the god taught by Jesus, Muhammed, & those of the Jewish faith,
  • to the teachings of the physical sciences,
  • to the teachings of biological sciences,
  • to medical science,
  • etc, etc,... you get the picture.
Some religions believe
  • in an eye for an eye,
  • life begins at conception,
  • life begins after fetus is 3 months old,
  • life begins at first breath after birth,
  • taking a life in war is o.k.,
  • war is o.k.
  • taking a life in self defense is o.k.
  • in turning the other cheek,
  • taking one's own life is a sin,
  • a god created the earth, universe and all things in it.
  • avenging male honor
  • female form & faces shouldn't be seen in public
  • divorce of marriage is ok
  • divorce of marriage is forbidden
  • divorce of marriage is the male spouses exclusive perogative
  • marriage of males to multiple female spouses is ok
  • etc... you get the picture here too.

So which one of "our" religions doesn't the US state respect?  It would appear that it respects some beliefs but not others... its rather arbitrary I think, but more or less biased to respecting most of the Christian & Jewish faith's beliefs. A secular state can't respect all religious beliefs since many have opposing beliefs... so the best practise of a secular state is to respect no religious beliefs at all.
